People tiring of demonstration, except protesters

People tiring of demonstration, except protesters Public demonstration: Protesters stage a rally outside the House of Representatives building in Jakarta on Friday. They rejected the presidential regulation in-lieu of the law (Perppu) on mass organizations, which they claimed would pave the way for authoritarian rule. The protesters also rejected the revival of communism in the country. (JP/Ibrahim Irsyad)

People are tired, demonstrations are unproductive!) that was displayed on a pedestrian bridge in front of the House of Representatives building in Central Jakarta immediately disappeared once participants of the 299 rally arrived.

Friday’s rally protested a regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on mass organizations, which was used by the government to ban Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), an Islamist organization that sought to establish a caliphate; it also protested a revival of communism and the disbanded Indonesia Communist Party (PKI).

The issue is apparently no longer interesting to many people, except for the protesters.

The Tangerang Police in Banten said that no Tangerang residents participated in the rally as they saw no mass movement of people heading to the capital.

The Bogor Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) along with the Nahdlatul Ulama in West Java urged the residents to refrain from attending the event.

“It’s better to hold istighosah [mass prayers] and dzikir [chants] at our local mosques,” said Bogor MUI chairman Ahmad Mukri Adji, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Meanwhile, a survey released by Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) on Friday shows that 87 percent of 1,057 respondents throughout Indonesia do not believe there is a resurrection of the long-disbanded PKI.
