ine inmates suspected of inciting a scuffle at Cipinang prison in East Jakarta on Thursday were transferred. The situation at the prison is now considered safe, Jatinegara Police chief Comr. Supadi said.
"Everything is under control," Supadi told tempo.com on Friday.
He explained that the incident occurred because the convicts had verbally insulted one another. The scuffle was reportedly triggered by six drug convicts and three convicted criminals on Thursday at around 9:30 a.m.
He went on to say that nobody had attacked each other physically.
The incident started from an altercation between convicts in the corridor of the third floor. The situation became more chaotic as the occupants of the first and second floors shouted that there was a commotion on the third floor.
Supadi had yet to specify what triggered the convicts to verbally insult each other in the first place.
To prevent the situation from escalating, the nine convicts who were suspected of starting the scuffle were transferred at 1 p.m. on Thursday. The six drug convicts were transferred to a narcotics prison.
Meanwhile, the three convicted criminals were moved to Salemba prison in Central Jakarta. (rfa)
