tate-owned weapon maker PT Pindad held the final firing test of its medium tank on Monday, which was jointly produced with Turkey’s FNSS Defense Systems Inc. at the Army’s infantry education center in West Bandung regency in West Java.
Pindad corporate secretary Tuning Rudyati said the firing test, which aimed to test the function of the 105-milimeter turret system, the main weapon of the medium tank, was held to obtain the necessary certificate from the Army’s Research and Development Agency.
“The firing test is the final test, which is to be completed today. The firing test started on Aug. 25,” Tuning said after attending the test.
A series of tests of the medium tank started in the middle of July, such as landmine blasts, testing the tank’s resistance to landmines and mobility tests. “We hope that the certificate will be issued within one month,” Tuning said.
Meanwhile, Pindad president director Abraham Mose said the construction of the medium tank was a long-term program to apply the technology in weapons development toward weapon production independence.
He said Indonesian experts in Pindad had developed 100 percent of the software, while parts of the hardware were still imported. “The local content of the product reaches about 70 percent,” Abraham added.
He claimed that the medium tank was similar to the main battle tank Leopard, made in Germany. “For the medium tank, it is the first [in the world]. It less heavy than the main battle tank. It is better in carrying out maneuvers,” Abraham added. (bbn)
