Andhadhun: A fresh thriller from Bollywood

Andhadhun is a thriller that begs to differ from the many clichés found in Bollywood films.

Director Sriram Raghavan’s Andhadhun, inspired by French short film L’Accordeur, tells the story of a musician who pretends to be blind and finds himself mixed up in a murder case.

Akash (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a talented pianist who is on the lookout for his big break. So he pretends to be blind to gain more attention and manages to fool everyone.

An accident introduces Akash to Sophie (Radhika Apte), who later offers him a job at her father’s restaurant.

While working at the restaurant, Akash meets former actor Pramod Sinha (Anil Dhawan), who asks the pianist to play at his house as an anniversary surprise for his wife, Simi (Tabu).

The thriller begins at Pramod’s house, where Akash has to pretend that he cannot see Simi, who truly believes he is blind, as she disposes of her husband’s dead body.

As the story unfolds, Simi tries to get rid of all evidence, even going so far as to kill anyone who gets in her way.

The director then drops an unexpected twist with a subplot that kind of veers the movie away from the original murder case but eventually, Raghavan manages to straighten out the thread that ties together all his characters.

While Raghavan manages to give the movie a proper ending, some questions about the plot are left unanswered — but these are covered up by his superb direction.

One of the most charming aspects of the movie is Khuranna’s performance in portraying a very complex character.

What’s going on: Akash opens his eyes in disbelief to find that he is really going blind.
What’s going on: Akash opens his eyes in disbelief to find that he is really going blind.

In the beginning, he has to play Akash, a man who is pretending to be blind, and he does so convincingly. Later, when Akash actually becomes blind, he succeeds in changing his mannerisms to portray someone who is truly visually impaired.

Simi’s performance as the ungrateful, selfish and cunning Tabu also does not disappoint. The actress is so convincing as Tabu that viewers will truly despise her.

Andhadhun keeps viewers wondering what will happen next, and will definitely keep them in their seats, waiting for the next thrilling scene.

Do not miss this movie, especially if you want to see a fresh entry to the Bollywood scene.

See no evil: Simi (Tabu) cautiously waits as Akash (Ayushmann Khuranna), who pretends to be blind, continues to play the piano while a crime is carried out.
