esidents of Kampung Pedurenan in Depok, West Java, were surprised to see a crack in the ground after rain poured down on Saturday afternoon. The crack, which stretched to around 20 meters, was visible in a field in front of some houses on Monday.
A video capturing the phenomenon went viral on social media on Sunday.
“It was pouring down with rain with heavy wind at 2 p.m. It lasted for about an hour. When it was over, my child told me that there was a crack in the field in front of our house,” a resident named Nasah said as quoted kompas.com on Monday.
“I’m shocked, the crack is about 1.5 meters deep,” Nasah added, adding that she had been worried ever since.
Another resident, Sutikno, said such a phenomenon had never happened before in the area.
“That’s why we’re all becoming anxious every time the rain pours down in our area. But the crack has definitely sped up water absorption,” he said.
The head of RT 02 neighborhood unit and RW 02 community unit, Endang Suherman, called on the Depok administration to immediately examine the crack in the ground.
“I hope that the administration will check the crack, talk to the residents and ensure that the crack doesn’t put us in danger,” Endang said. (vla)
