A Taiwanese inmate was found dead in his cell in Cipinang penitentiary in East Jakarta on Tuesday, a prison officer has said.
The suspected cause of the death of the 42-year-old man was suicide by hanging.
“Yes, there was an inmate who died. [He] was found hanged at around 6 p.m.,” said Cipinang penitentiary spokesman Tri Mulyanto on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
The head of public relations at the Law and Human Rights Ministry's Corrections Directorate General, Ade Kusmanto, said that the inmate had been at the prison for a criminal case related to fisheries.
“He was implicated in a fisheries criminal case and was sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment,” he said.
Ade explained that his side could not provide more details yet regarding the motive of the alleged suicide.
“[We are] still working on the crime scene,” he added. (sau)
