he vacant deputy Jakarta governor seat will be filled by a Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) politician following an agreement reached during a meeting between the Islam-based party and the Gerindra Party on Monday.
The post has remained vacant for the past several months following Sandiaga Uno’s resignation to run as a vice presidential candidate in next year’s presidential election. Gerindra and PKS backed Governor Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga during the gubernatorial election last year.
“We are committed to following the mandate from Gerindra chairman Prabowo Subianto to give the seat to PKS,” Gerindra Jakarta chapter head M. Taufik said as quoted by kompas.com. He was previously touted as the one to be given the post.
Both Prabowo and Sandiaga, the pair that will challenge President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in his reelection bid, come from Gerindra.
PKS Jakarta chapter head Syakir Purnomo said that his party would prepare two names to be proposed to the city council to be assessed for the vacant post.
“There will be a fit and proper test to determine [the two final candidates],” Syakir said. (fac)
