Once the victim gave the money to the child, the perpetrators attacked.
man named Edi was reportedly mugged by four people at the Tanjung Priok bus terminal in North Jakarta around midnight on Monday after giving a child beggar Rp 5,000 (33 US cents).
Tanjung Priok Police chief Comr. Supriyanto said that the incident started when a child came toward Edi begging for money when the latter had just got out of an angkot (public minivan).
“The victim gave the child Rp 5,000. Suddenly, perpetrators came and pointed sharp weapons at him,” he said on Monday, as quoted by kompas.com.
Supriyanto said the muggers rummaged through Edi's pocket and stole his cellphone.
“The muggers then ran away,” he said.
Edi reported the mugging to the Tanjung Priok police who were on patrol.
The police have arrested one of the suspected perpetrators, Nona Haryati, the mother of the child.
Supriyanto said she allegedly used her child so the victim would feel pity. He added that Nona was reportedly a recidivist and that her husband had been imprisoned for a similar case.
“The child will beg for money. Once the victim gives the money, the perpetrators will attack [the victim],” he said. (sau)
