arcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamulja of Indonesia have reached the final of the 2018 Hong Kong Open, putting the world number-one pair just a step away from retaining the title on Sunday.

Fresh from winning the China Open last week, Marcus and Kevin defeated compatriots Muhammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in a three-game match 21-14, 18-21, 21-9 in the semifinals at the Hong Kong Coloseum in Kowloon on Saturday.

“We did alright in the first game, but we were rushing it in the second, which backfired.

“We had to change our strategy in the rubber game to win the match,” said Marcus in a statement.

Meanwhile, Kevin lauded their opponents’ solid defense, which forced Marcus and him to go the extra mile to eventually own the match.

In the final, Marcus and Kevin will play against Japan’s fourth-seeded pair of Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda, who beat Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto in the semifinals. (nkn)
