N

ine people have been arrested for allegedly participating in a brawl that killed senior high school student Anwar, 19, in South Tangerang, Banten, on Sunday,

The fight was reportedly triggered by a stolen mobile phone. Eight of the suspects are students. The police are searching for two more people who were allegedly involved in the incident.

“The case involves murder, assault and aggravated robbery, leaving one person dead. Most of the suspects are still underaged,” South Tangerang criminal investigation unit head Adj. Comr. Alexander Yuriko said on Tuesday as reported by kompas.com.

The suspects, he said, actively searched for another group of young men after a music concert on Friday night to confront them about the theft of one of their mobile phones, which they claimed had been stolen by a member of the latter group in November.

The suspects waited until early Saturday morning and allegedly launched their attack as the other group was climbing onto a truck.

Some reportedly blocked the vehicle while one stabbed Anwar with a small sickle and another took his phone.

Anwar was rushed to the hospital but died en route.

Police arrested the suspects at their respective homes on the same day.

Alexander said the police have contacted the Banten branch of the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s social unit and South Tangerang Integrated Women and Children's Centers (P2TP2A) as well as lawyers to represent the suspects as they were still underage. (ami)
