Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said he wished a confirmation hearing for deputy governor candidates could take place this month.
The Jakarta regional board (DPW) of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) has proposed three names for the vacant post. Anies said he was glad that there was progress in the discussion over who would accompany him in the remaining four years of his term at City Hall.
“We hope the confirmation [hearing] will be held in January. There have been [increasing] signs that Gerindra and the PKS will agree on a deputy candidate,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.
The deputy governor position has been empty since Sandiaga Uno decided in August to run alongside Gerindra Party chief Prabowo Subianto in the upcoming presidential election.
Gerindra and the PKS are two parties that endorsed Anies and Sandiaga in the Jakarta gubernatorial election in 2017. Hence, they have the right to propose names of candidates to replace Sandiaga.
The three candidates are former Bekasi deputy mayor and PKS politician Ahmad Syaikhu, PKS Jakarta DPW secretary-general Agung Yulianto and Jakarta PKS sharia board head Abdurrahman Suhaimi, who currently serves as a member of the Jakarta Council.
The confirmation hearing by the PKS and Gerindra, will choose two of the three candidates to be proposed to the City Council, which will determine the deputy governor.
Besides the candidates, the PKS has also proposed two names to take part in the confirmation hearing team, namely University of Indonesia (UI) public policy expert Eko Prasojo and Jakarta State University (UNJ) political scientist Ubedilah Badrun. The Gerindra Party, meanwhile, has come up with two names: researcher Siti Zuhro and Gerindra’s Jakarta executive board deputy chief Syarif. (vla)
