The new transportation authority is designed to control the entire transportation system in Greater Jakarta.
ince the concept of autonomous regions was introduced in 1999, attempts to establish a credible transportation authority in Greater Jakarta have always hit a brick wall as each local government defended its own transportation policy.
Although there is already the Greater Jakarta Transportation Management Body (BPTJ), President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo proposed to establish a new institution as the existing body lacked the authority to deal with different interests among the local governments of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Bekasi and Tangerang.
“The President has given us until no later than July to establish a new transportation authority that can control the entire transportation system in Greater Jakarta,” Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said in his office on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
He said the establishment of the new transportation authority was in line with the decision to launch a giant transportation project worth Rp 571 trillion (US$40.28 billion), most of which would used to improve public transportation.
The project was proposed by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and was agreed in a limited Cabinet meeting earlier this week chaired by President Jokowi.
Basuki said the new transportation authority was expected to be able to coordinate the operations of all transportation modes in the Greater Jakarta area, such as the MRT, light rapid transit (LRT), commuter line (KRL) and Transjakarta, as well as the operation of toll roads.
It was an improvement on the BPTJ, which was currently under the control of the Transportation Ministry with very limited authority, he said, adding that the new institution would be given wider authority to manage the transportation system.
