usinesswoman Dian Djuriah Rais, founder of popular tourist destination Dian Al Mahri mosque in Depok, West Java province, popularly known as the Golden Dome Mosque, died early on Friday morning. She was 70.

Depok Deputy Mayor Pradi Supriatna confirmed the news, saying that Dian, who was also known as Dian al Mahri, had died at Pondok Indah Hospital in South Jakarta at around 2:15 a.m.

She had been receiving treatment for pneumonia for the past week.

She was later buried in the grounds of her namesake mosque.

Hundreds of people attended her funeral on Friday afternoon.

Pradi said he was deeply saddened by the news, calling Dian a true inspiration for all.

“Her masterpiece, the Golden Dome Mosque, is very popular in the country, even abroad. It is an icon of Depok city,” Pradi said as quoted by kompas.com.

Dian Al Mahri Mosque sits on an 8,000-square-meter plot of land and has five domes coated with 24-carat gold. Dian and her husband, Maimun Al Rasyid, financed the mosque’s construction and development. It was designed by architect Uke Setiawan.

Construction started in 2001 and finished by the end of 2006. Since it opened, the mosque has been the most popular tourist destination in, attracting domestic and foreign tourists. The mosque’s presence has also helped generate income for residents living nearby. (vny)
