The results of the 2019 general election show that dynastic politics remains potent in several regions, with spouses and relatives of local leaders winning legislative seats.

In West Sumatra, the wives of two regional heads have secured seats at the House of Representatives, while one has obtained a seat in the provincial Regional Legislative Council (DPRD).

The three winners are Nevi Zuairina, the wife of West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno; Lisda Hendrajoni, the wife of South Pesisir Regent Hendrajoni, and Yunisra Syahiran, the wife of West Pasaman Regent Syahiran.

Five other wives of regional leaders also ran for legislative seats at various levels in the province, but they failed to win.

Andalas University political observer Edi Indrizal said the women had been elected because of the influence of their husbands, who had used their popularity and networks effectively.

“Even though they may not admit it openly, their husbands’ power and influence as regional heads is a very useful basis to use as part of the wives’ campaign strategy,” he said.
