he civil service was back in nearly full force on Monday, the first day of work after the one-week Idul Fitri holiday, during which millions of people made trips to their respective hometowns to celebrate the biggest Islamic holiday with family.

Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Syafruddin monitored the civil servants’ attendance on Monday through the real-time monitoring system, which was first launched in 2018, in his office in Jakarta.

“I’m responsible for 4.3 million civil servants across the country,” the minister said at the Command Center on Monday.

At least 4.3 million civil servants working in 543 government institutions nationwide, including the 88 central government agencies, had to report their attendance through the system before 3 p.m. on Monday.

Ministry official Mudzakir said that as of 3 p.m., according to data compiled from 331 institutions, the level of attendance had reached 96.1 percent, up from 93 percent in 2018. In the past, civil servants were notorious for poor attendance on the first days of work after the long holiday, usually without justifiable reasons.

Ministry officials would discuss possible sanctions on institutions that failed to meet the deadline to report the Monday attendance.

Within the ministry itself, from the total of 488 civil servants, 16 people were still on leave, while two others skipped work without justifiable reasons.
