The Jakarta Police have named former chief Comr. Gen. (ret) Sofyan Jacob a treason suspect, an official said on Monday.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono confirmed the status. “Yes, we have named him a suspect. His case is now being handled by National Police detectives,” Argo was quoted by tempo.co as saying.

Argo did not detail the case implicating Sofyan, who made his name following the arrest of president Soeharto’s youngest son Tommy Soeharto in 2001 in a murder case. Sofyan was the chief who established a team, code named Cobra, led by his then-subordinate National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian.

According to Argo, Sofyan was scheduled to be questioned at the Jakarta Police headquarters at 10 a.m., but he had called in sick and therefore the investigators decided to delay the questioning.

Separately, Sofyan’s lawyer, Ahmad Yani, said his client would be ready for the probe next week.

“We have sent his letter to the investigators. We will let them [the police] decide the new schedule,” Ahmad said.

According to Ahmad, Sofjan had been implicated in the same case as a member of the Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno campaign team, Eggi Sudjana.

Eggi has been detained by the police for  allegedly instigating a rally linked to the Prabowo camp's efforts to delegitimize the results of the presidential election. (dmr)
