amily, friends and neighbors of two teenagers drowned off Ancol Beach in North Jakarta scattered flowers into the water on Monday in hope that the still missing body of one of them would soon be discovered. The mourners went to the beach after the burial of one of the victims, a 12-year-old identified as AR.

“The incident occurred when the victims were playing with friends and swimming on the seaside at 4 p.m. Sunday,” the head of the Jakarta Search and Rescue Agency (SAR), Hendra Sudirman, said on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

The victims were suddenly engulfed in a large wave and they panicked as they were pulled into the ocean. AR and AK, 14, were swept away because they did not know how to swim well. Friends of the victims searched for them, but only managed to find one lifeless body.

The incident was reported to firefighters and SAR.

“Since last night the combined SAR team has been searching for the other victim by dividing the search into two areas,” Hendra said.

The first team has been searching the sea bottom near the beach using rubber boats and anchors, while the second team has been searching the shoreline.

At least 40 SAR personnel are involved in the search. (tru)
