As a preventive measure, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has been asked to help supervise the development of Masela block in the Arafura Sea to ensure the multi-billion gas project is free from irregularities.
The request comes weeks after ex-president director of state energy giant Pertamina, Karen Agustiawan, was sentenced to prison for graft in a case related to oil and gas investment.
KPK deputy for prevention Pahala Nainggolan said the request had come from the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas).
“SKK Migas wants us to accompany them in the implementation of Masela’s development project. [...] to ensure nothing interferes [with the implementation] in terms of corruption prevention,” he said.
Pahala further said SKK Migas had visited the KPK earlier this week to discuss the project.
If the KPK accepts the request, the antigraft body will scrutinize Masela’s cost of development, which is estimated to reach at least US$18 billion.
