In June, the FAO distributed cash to over 4,000 families in which someone was pregnant or under 5 years old in 175 subdistricts.
n cooperation with the Central Sulawesi provincial administration, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Tuesday distributed aid to farmers and fishermen in Sigi, one of the worst-hit regencies during last year’s earthquake and tsunami.
Comprising 430 tons of fertilizer, 7 tons of corn, tomato and chili seedlings and over 500,000 meters of plastic mulch, the aid was distributed to about 8,000 farmers in 132 subdistricts in Sigi regency.
“[This will help in] the recovery of food production and the livelihoods of the farmers and fishermen in the disaster-affected regions of Palu, Sigi and Donggala,” FAO Indonesia representative office head Stephen Rudgard said.
In June, the FAO also distributed cash to over 4,000 families in which someone was pregnant or under 5 years old in 175 subdistricts.
In the near future, Rudgard said, the FAO would also distribute fishing equipment including nets and cooler boxes to 3,000 fisherfolk in the province.
The FAO, he added, wanted to make sure that farmers and fishermen affected by the earthquakes could return to normality.
The US$1 million program, according to him, was funded by the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund to help the government respond to the earthquake and tsunami.
