Jakarta deputy governor to be selected by next batch of city councillors

Jakartans will have to wait a little longer to get a new deputy governor as the 2014 to 2019 tenure for city councillors is coming to an end at the end of August, leaving the selection process to the next batch of councillors who will serve from 2019 to 2024.

espite having conducted comparative studies as far as the Riau Islands and Central Java provinces to learn how to elect a deputy governor replacement, not to mention having held a series of meetings at home, the Jakarta councillors have come to the conclusion that they are unable to make a decision on the position, which has been left vacant for almost a year.

The latest planned city council joint leaders meeting (rapimgab) to approve a code of conduct for the deputy governor selection process drafted by the deputy governor selection committee on July 22 was cancelled. The office has been left vacant since Aug. 10 last year after Sandiaga Uno decided to run for vice president alongside Prabowo Subianto in this year's presidential election. The pair lost to the incumbent.

The meeting was cancelled because “at the time none of the city council leaders were able to make it. We have to approve the code of conduct before proceeding [to select a new deputy governor],” deputy head of the Gerindra Party faction at the Jakarta City Council Iman Satria said on Thursday.

He said the meeting was supposed to be attended by the city council speaker and deputy speakers as well as the leaders of each party faction, however conflicting schedules had hindered the process.

“I am sure it would not be done within this period. New city councillors will be sworn in on Aug. 26,” Iman said.

He said that even before that the current city councillors still had busy schedules including work visits and discussions on the city budget.
