A student said the vodka bottles were proof of the existing stereotyping of Papuans as drunks.
ozens of Papuan students returned several bottles of alcohol to the police at a public event in Bandung, West Java on Thursday to protest the apparent racial stereotyping of Papuans as drunks.
The students said they received the bottles in cardboard boxes at their dorm on Jl. Cilaki from two people and learned that it was vodka of the Topi Koboi brand and had an alcohol content of 19 percent, according to the labels. A written note on the box said the delivery was from the police.
The students had pictures and videos to prove their accusations.
At that time, the dorm was almost empty because most of the students were participating in a rally to protest against racist abuse, allegedly by security officers, of fellow students in Surabaya, East Java, last week. Later, the students at the dorm brought the bottles to the rally, where they met with the sender.
“What was the intention of sending this to us?” they asked Sukajadi Police chief Comr. Sarce Christiati, who was guarding the rally.
Christiati confirmed that she had sent the bottles, but she insisted they did not contain alcohol. “I would like to clarify. They are not alcoholic drinks. They are fresh beverages for you,” she said.
