hile still mourning the recent deaths of his wife and mother, Democratic Party chairman and former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has revealed the direction his party is taking after the general election this year.

In a speech he gave on Monday to commemorate his 70th birthday and the 100 days since the passing of his wife Ani Yudhoyono, he asked people to support President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in his second term so that his administration would be successful in fulfilling the people’s mandate.

“As an individual and the leader of the Democratic Party, I ask my brothers, the people of Indonesia, to give a chance and support the upcoming administration,” he said from his residence in Bogor, West Java.

The event, which also commemorated the party’s 18th anniversary, was attended by his two sons — Agus Harimurti and Edhie Bhaskoro — and other party executives.

The political remarks were the first made by the retired Army general since he withdrew himself from any political activities, including campaigns for the April legislative and presidential elections, to tend to his ailing wife, who had been admitted to a hospital in Singapore at the beginning of this year to receive treatment for blood cancer.

Ani passed away at the hospital in June at the age of 66, after months of receiving intensive care, with Yudhoyono at her side.

Yudhoyono and his family grieved for the second time when his mother, Siti Habibah, passed away earlier this month at the age of 87.
