President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, appears keen to follow in his father’s footsteps as he visited the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) branch in Surakarta, Central Java, on Monday to apply for membership as part of his plan to run in the city’s mayoral election.
A party membership card (KTA) is one of the requirements to become a mayoral candidate in the city with party backing.
Gibran also addressed the media to explain banners bearing his face that had appeared across the city, although Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) personnel had taken them down by Sunday afternoon over alleged violations of rules.
“Yes, I am here to apply for a PDI-P membership card. In addition, I’d also like to clarify to all of you the recent appearance of banners with my face on them that have spread across Surakarta,” said Gibran on Monday.
The food entrepreneur and father of Jan Ethes, a toddler of considerable prominence thanks to his famous grandfather, arrived at the PDI-P executive board office in the late afternoon, where he was welcomed by local executive board head Joko Santoso.
Gibran did not deny that he was registering for PDI-P membership to become a candidate in the 2020 mayoral election.
“According to the instructions of Surakarta Mayor FX Hadi Rudyatmo, I am required to possess a KTA card before registering as a candidate. I will then register at the Banjarsari branch in accordance with my domicile,” he told reporters.
