Students to the rescue: Creative innovations aim to tackle mounting urban issues School children visit a booth that displays an innovation called Budi Luhur Smart Trash Bin (BLAST), a prototype trash can with an ultrasonic sensor to detect movement, during the 2019 Puspiptek Innovation Festival in South Tangerang, Banten, on Oct. 4. The trash can lid automatically opens when someone approaches to throw garbage into it. The sensor system will send SMS notifications to the collectors when the bin is almost full. It was crafted by university students of Budi Luhur University. (JP/Sausan Atika) (Sausan Atika/Sausan Atika)

s younger generations around the globe have started to rise to the occasion, university students in Greater Jakarta have also joined in the trend with innovations aimed at tackling mounting urban issues such as air pollution and waste management.

A group of three university students from the School of Computer Science at the Veteran National Development University of Jakarta, developed an application called Socio Green to engage people in efforts to reduce air pollution.

“What is something that very close to our daily lives? We thought about climate and how we can change people’s habits,” Eka Dewi Sisri, a student of fifth semester, part of the team, told The Jakarta Post on Friday during an exposition at the 2019 Puspiptek Innovation Festival in South Tangerang, Banten.

Along with her friends, Uus Rusdiana and M. Suyudi Alrajak, they developed the app, which allows users to monitor air quality in their residential areas. For the time being, the app covers Jakarta only.

The team cooperates with Greenpeace Indonesia to connect the data from air quality monitoring software Air Visual to the app.

To engage users in climate change efforts, the students provide a feature for users to choose options of planting trees and using public transportation.

Users will gain 200 points for one tree planted and 150 points per public transportation trip.
