During a shareholders meeting on Jan. 22, Irfan Setiaputra and former Creative Economy Agency head Triawan Munaf were appointed, respectively, as the president director and president commissioner of national airline Garuda Indonesia.
he new board of directors of Garuda Indonesia has promised to improve good corporate governance practices as one of the main priorities in turning the national carrier into a credible company and a safe air carrier to fly with.
Garuda’s newly appointed president director Irfan Setiaputra said that implementing good governance would be the first thing he would do as his short-term priority in bringing back the trust of the people to the airline, which has been marred by a number of controversies in both business and non-business aspects.
“We will make sure that good corporate governance is well implemented. We should set a good example to our team and give a firm message to them,” said Irfan. “We will make a new regulation so the past mistakes do not happen again,” said Irfan during a press briefing on Friday.
To make sure the new management adheres to the good corporate governance principles, Irfan said the new board would issue an integrity pact that would be signed by all Garuda executives and employees. The integrity pact will consist of points that make sure whoever works for Garuda does not abuse their power for personal interest.
“In the integrity pact, we will limit or prohibit certain actions that can lead to abuse of power from top employees to staff. We will take firm action if there is an abuse of authority,” he said, adding that the integrity pact was still in the drafting process and under discussion.
“Hopefully by next week we will know the details of the integrity pact,” said Irfan, who was appointed on Jan. 22 to replace Ari Askhara.
Former Creative Economy Agency head Triawan Munaf was named Garuda’s new president commissioner and pluralism activist Yenny Wahid was chosen as its independent commissioner.
