ndonesian wrestler turned MMA fighter Eko Roni Saputra feels optimistic about his chances in an upcoming bout against Cambodian fighter Khon Sichan in Jakarta, even despite his opponent’s greater MMA experience.
The fight between Eko and Sichan will take place at an upcoming ONE Championship event dubbed ONE: Warrior’s Code at the Istora Senayan sport stadium on Saturday
“My opponent is a fighter with solid experience and techniques. However, I have been studying him for a while and have found the areas where I could orchestrate the fight in my favor,” Eko, a former national wrestler, said in a press statement sent to The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
Eko acknowledged that he had been focusing on upper body contact to keep up with his opponent, who is a Muay Thai specialist. He vowed to go all out in the upcoming bout and to learn from past mistakes, including a loss to Singaporean fighter Nico Soe in Manila early last year.
Eko said he had a strong support system, with his wife Nurdila Agusta often accompanying him in training and providing feedback.
“[She] not only accompanies me when training but my wife has been the one who studies material about my opponent, helping me to assess his fighting pattern. She is like a manager to me,” Eko, who trains at the Evolve MMA club in Singapore, said.
