oris Saubaki and Telly Saubaki-Saudila of Oebobo district, Kupang, in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) were surprised to see the image of their daughter, Ananda Saubaki, on the commemorative Rp 75,000 (US$5.08) bill, which was issued by Bank Indonesia (BI) to celebrate Indonesia’s 75th Independence Day.

The couple recalled that Ananda took part in a photo contest held by BI last year but they did not expect Ananda’s face to be featured on the special banknote.

“BI requested that participants send pictures of children wearing traditional attire. Ananda passed the selection and went for the photo shoot,” Moris told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Ananda, who is now 7 years old, did a photo shoot wearing traditional NTT attire in August 2019 at BI's NTT office in Kupang. At that time, both Ananda and her parents did not know that the picture taken during the photo shoot was intended to be featured on this year’s Rp 75,000 bill.

“Today I just found out that the picture taken a year ago was used as part of the design for the commemorative bill,” said Moris, adding that he and Telly were proud of their daughter, a second grader at SD Naikoten 1 state elementary school.

The new bill features the faces of the country's first president and vice president, Sukarno and Muhammad Hatta, as well as Indonesia's first flag-hoisting ceremony during the country’s Declaration of Independence on Aug. 17, 1945 and the country’s infrastructure pride such as the Jakarta MRT, Papua’s Youtefa Bridge and the trans-Java toll road.

On the reverse side, the bill depicts nine Indonesian children wearing traditional attire from Aceh, Riau, Central Java, West Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, NTT, Gorontalo, Maluku and Papua.

Previously, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the special Rp 75,000 bill was an expression of gratitude for the country’s independence and a symbol of revival and optimism in facing future challenges, including challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"[Bank Indonesia] did not issue the special bills to improve liquidity to fund [the country's] economic activities. [...] but to commemorate Indonesia 75th Independence Day and to express gratitude for the country's independence," Sri Mulyani said during an online press conference on Monday.

BI has released 75 million of the new bill.

BI also issued three commemorative bills when celebrating Indonesia’s 25th, 45th and 50th Independence Days. (aly)
