espite claims that it is spearheading the country’s efforts to address the climate crisis, the Indonesian Environmental Estate Fund (BPDLH) has not received or disbursed any money for environmental causes.
Established in October 2019, the agency was made responsible for managing funds from domestic and international sources intended for environmental conservation and for disbursing them for environmental initiatives. The BPDLH has also been made responsible for developing a carbon market.
The agency has an important role in helping the country in reach its climate mitigation and adaptation pledge as laid out in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) program, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar said during this year’s Coalition Ambition Summit last month.
But BPDLH acting director Djoko Hendratto said the agency had not started working because it was waiting for the government to finish the procurement of at least three environmental funds.
Indonesia is set to receive some US$270 million in grants from three sources: Norway’s Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) scheme, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) partnership.
The grants were awarded to help Indonesia reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
