resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take action in response to recent Israeli aggression against Palestinians, including the violent clash on Monday at Al-Aqsa mosque, one of Islam's holiest houses of worship.

“Indonesia condemns such acts and urges the UN Security Council to take measures on the repeated violations carried out by Israel. Indonesia will continue to stand with the people of Palestine,” said Jokowi.

Palestine is on the government’s shortlist of key diplomatic priorities.

Monday’s clashes with Israeli police erupted when Palestinians in Jerusalem protested in solidarity with the residents of Sheikh Jarrah and against Israel, which is making moves to evict several families from the neighborhood. Dozens were injured in the incident.

“The forced eviction of Palestinians from Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem, and the use of force against Palestinian civilians at Al-Aqsa Mosque must not be ignored,” the President tweeted on Monday.

In an article published on May 7 on UN News, the UN human rights office (OHCHR) stated that “eight Palestinian refugee families in Sheikh Jarrah are facing forced eviction due to a legal challenge by the Nahalat Shimon settler organization, with the risk ‘imminent’ for four of the families”.

It was also a violation of international humanitarian law and “may amount to a war crime”, OHCHR spokesperson Rupert Colville was quoted as saying.
