“We must remain committed and stand united in our efforts against all illegal acts by Israel and toward ending the occupation in Palestine,” Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said.
Indonesia has called for more international pressure for peace negotiations between Palestine and Israel that would address the “core issue” of the conflict, as the two warring sides announced a ceasefire on Friday.
Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi and 10 other top diplomats from Muslim-majority countries were in New York this week to speak at a United Nations General Assembly plenary session on the situation in Palestine.
The meeting, which began on Thursday local time, was the first in-person UN meeting attended by foreign ministers since the start of COVID-19 pandemic last year. Along with the 11 top diplomats, 103 delegates from countries and international organizations were slated to speak during the session.
“All of us know this conflict is asymmetric by nature – between Israel, which is the oppressor and occupying power, and the Palestinians, who are the occupied and are continuously being oppressed. Occupation is the core issue,” Retno said in her address.
If the fundamental issue of the conflict was not resolved, she said, a similar situation was bound to happen in the future.
