he Indonesia Retail & Tenant Association (Hippindo) has launched a center to vaccinate 150,000 retail workers in an effort to revive the industry, which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hippindo plans to vaccinate 3,000 industry workers every day for 50 days starting on Monday. The association’s vaccination center is located in the Smesco building on Jl. Gatot Subroto in South Jakarta, which belongs to the Cooperatives and SMEs Ministry.

The Hippindo vaccination center is said to be the country’s second largest after the one at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

“We hope that, through this vaccination drive, we can regain at least 80 percent of the pre-pandemic [industry] profit of Rp 600 trillion [US$42 billion],” said Hippindo chairman Budihardjo Iduansjah during the center’s launch event on Monday.

Of the targeted vaccine recipients, 90,000 workers are to hail from the micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector, such as warehouse employees, delivery couriers and barbers, while the remaining 60,000 workers are Hippindo members.

According to the Hippindo website, the association’s members hail from the food and beverage, fashion, cinema, electronics and other retail sectors, and together employ around 800,000 workers.

Meanwhile, ministry data show that MSMEs contribute over 60 percent to gross domestic product (GDP) and employ around 97 percent of the nation’s workforce.
