The former national disaster and COVID-19 response head has been appointed to lead Indonesia's mining holding company, chiefly because of his environmental experience and expertise.
oni Monardo, a retired Army lieutenant general of the Indonesian Military (TNI), has been appointed president commissioner of state-owned mining holding company Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) to succeed Agus Tjahajana Wirakusumah, who has been named president commissioner of state-owned Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC).
Doni’s active support for the environment was cited as the reason for his appointment.
“His concern for and his work in environmental restoration make him the appropriate figure to balance environmental efforts at Inalum and its subsidiaries,” State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir said in a statement on Friday, noting also that Doni had a broad network connecting many stakeholders.
Doni has most recently been the head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), leading the national COVID-19 task force as an extension of this position. He was also known for the Citarum River restoration project during his time as the nation’s disaster response chief.
