he General Elections Commission (KPU) and lawmakers have dismissed recent speculation that the 2024 elections will be delayed by three years, adding that preparations were already underway.

“Because there was no revision to the Election Law, the elections will still follow a five-year cycle,” KPU commissioner Pramono Ubaid said on Thursday. “There is no legal basis to postpone the election until 2027.”

Pramono was referring to the decision made by the House of Representatives and the government in March to drop a proposed amendment to the 2017 General Elections Law from the House’s National Legislative Program (Prolegnas) this year. Both parties agreed that the country needed to avoid frequent changes to its election rules.

According to the law, Indonesia will hold its next presidential, legislative and regional elections in 2024.
