“I cannot wait for high-speed, low-latency connection. As soon as there is an affordable 5G [plan], I am going to switch,” said Jakarta-based fintech employee Dyatmika “Adya” Paramaanindya when asked about his intention to switch from a 4G connection to the newly available 5G network in Indonesia.

The 25-year-old went on to say that he would be willing to pay twice his usual monthly bill for mobile and home internet to have 5G access. Adya would pay Rp 200,000 to Rp 300,000 (US$14 to $21) for mobile subscriptions and up to Rp 1.2 million for fixed broadband.

“I want to use 5G for work, browsing and online streaming, but the biggest impact will be for gaming,” he told The Jakarta Post on Monday, adding that a suboptimal internet connection meant slower gameplay in real-time online games.

Adya’s view reflects findings in a YouGov study that found that 60 percent of Indonesians were willing to pay more for 5G connections, a higher proportion than in the other 16 countries surveyed.

People in Asia generally scored higher, the pollsters found, with 20 percent to 60 percent willing to fork out more for 5G, while in European countries only 9 percent to 34 percent expressed a willingness to pay extra.

Two of the biggest Indonesian telecommunication operators – state-owned Telkomsel and state-owned Indosat – have begun rolling out the first-ever commercial 5G services in selected areas.
