he House of Representatives approved seven new Supreme Court justices in a plenary session on Tuesday, following confirmation hearings held a day before.

The deputy chairman of House Commission III overseeing legal affairs, human rights and security, Adies Kadir, said on Tuesday that the seven justices had been unanimously selected by the political factions in the commission.

“Based on the views of the nine factions in Commission III, seven candidates have been approved to become 2021 Supreme Court justices,” Kadir said at the plenary session.

Five of the justices are set to serve in the Supreme Court’s criminal chamber, namely Dwiarso Budi Santiarto, Jupriyadi, Prim Haryadi, Suharto and Yohanes Priyana.

Dwiarso, who is a former head of the Supreme Court Supervisory Agency, was on the panel of judges that heard a high-profile blasphemy case in 2017 implicating then-Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Prunama.

Jupriyadi previously served as high justice in the Supreme Court Supervisory Agency. Prim was the director general of the Supreme Court’s general courts (Badilum), while Suharto was a junior clerk for special crimes and Yohanes previously served as a judge for the Kupang High Court in East Nusa Tenggara.

Two other justices are set to fill civil and military chamber seats respectively, namely Haswandi, who previously served as a junior clerk for the Supreme Court, and Brig. Gen. Tama Ulinta Tarigan, former deputy chief of a military appellate court.
