Kadin and eight start-ups are launching a digitalization program to ramp up the competitiveness of MSMEs, which contributed 60 percent of GDP last year.
ight start-ups are joining forces with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) to help with the digital transformation of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the agriculture, fisheries, retail and small-scale industries sectors.
The eight are agritech start-ups Sayur Box, MSMB and Tanihub, fisheries start-ups EFishery and Aruna, and e-commerce start-up Bukalapak, along with peer-to-peer (P2P) lender Investree and GoTo-backed payment services provider Bank Jago that are to provide funding for the MSMEs in the program.
Bambang Brodjonegoro, who heads the People's Economic Empowerment Agency at Kadin, said on Wednesday that the start-ups were among the most experienced in collaborating with MSMEs, farmers, fishermen and small industries.
Other organizations slated to join Kadin’s MSME digitalization program are Sampoerna Retail Community, a training program for retail MSMEs initiated by cigarette producer HM Sampoerna, and Yayasan Dharma Bhakti Astra, a foundation sponsored by diversified conglomerate Astra International that supports blacksmithing businesses.
“Some [start-ups] are committed to joining the Kadin program to empower [local economies],” Bambang told a webinar on Wednesday organized by diversified conglomerate Sinar Mas Group.

MSMEs contributed around 60 percent to gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020 to become the backbone of the Indonesian economy, according to Bambang’s webinar presentation. The country had 64.6 million MSMEs in 2020, with the figure expected to grow 7 percent to 92.3 million by 2025.
