The retail sales index is estimated to have contracted by 1.8 percent year-on-year in September, which marks an improvement from a 2.1 percent annual contraction in August.

Bank Indonesia (BI) reported Monday that the retail sales index contracted by an estimated 1.8 percent year-on-year (yoy) to 190.3 in September. The contraction is smaller than the 2.1 percent annual contraction in August.
“The result of the retail sales survey in August indicated an improvement,” Muhamad Nur, a group head at the central bank’s communications department, was quoted in a press release as saying on Monday.
“In line with that, respondents are expecting the retail sales performance to continue improving gradually in September.”
The number of visitors to retail and recreation places in Indonesia has rebounded to the prepandemic level, Google mobility data show. On Oct. 6, it was 5 percent above the normal level on a seven-day moving average basis.

Sales of communication and information tools were estimated to have contracted by 27.8 percent in September from a year earlier, less than the 32.4 percent annual contraction seen in August.
