Earlier in the day, in the men's Thomas Cup semifinals, Japan lost to China 3-1. China's Shi Yuqi retired from his singles match against Kento Momota when he was 20-5 down in the second set.
The Thomas Cup is the official world team championship for men and the Uber Cup is the women's equivalent.
