Gerindra has begun marshaling support for its chairman, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, to run again for the nation’s top office in 2024, as the party grasps for an early lead in what experts think will be a tight race.
he Gerindra Party has jumped on the early campaign bandwagon to shore up support for Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto for the 2024 presidential election, following the party chairman’s strong showing in recent electability polls.
The head of the party’s central board, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, said over the weekend that more than a dozen regional boards from across the country had declared their support for Prabowo, despite the election being three years away.
These include the West Java and Central Java regional boards, which the House of Representatives deputy speaker said had endorsed Prabowo because of his perceived electability.
Dasco said he was optimistic that Prabowo would be prepared run again for the presidency.
“Looking at how spirited the support from our [regional] friends is, I am highly optimistic,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com.
Prabowo himself remains tight-lipped about his plans for the 2024 elections, but he continues to hold sway over his own political faction, unlike some other party chiefs.
Shortly after the retired general was reelected Gerindra Party chairman in August 2020, party officials said they would seek to nominate him as the party’s 2024 presidential candidate.
