The Jakarta Post's Tama Salim and Yvette Tanamal recently sat down with Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi, co-convenor of the Group of Twenty (G20) Sherpa track, to find out what Indonesia expects from the G20 Summit.
The high-level week of the G20 Summit is now underway, with delegates from 20 member states and special invitees from 19 other countries and international organizations descending on the mystical island of Bali in hopes of delivering on global promises that would impact the lives of billions of people worldwide. The Jakarta Post recently sat down with Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi, co-convenor of the G20 Sherpa track, to find out what Indonesia expects from the proceedings. The following are excerpts from the interview:
Question: Do you have any message for the delegates?
Answer: In short and very simple terms: Let us work together to make the G20 deliver. And of course, it is an honor for Indonesia to be the host and the G20 President.
We know the ongoing dynamics of the world now; we are fully aware and understand the situation. We also know that the differences between the G20 countries are rather vast and deep, but it is Indonesia’s intention as the G20 President to put in the maximum work possible.
We are more than ready to go the extra mile and to put in the extra effort to make the G20 deliver. And while to do that, the role of the G20 presidency is indeed important, the President cannot do it alone.
It is our hope for the delegates, for all members, to show collective responsibility and leadership so that we may, as our tagline reads, make the G20 deliver.
