The use of technology will not lead to a loss of jobs, but rather will boost the demand for new skills and create more prospects for employment.
or the third time, Indonesia was named the official country partner of Hannover Messe, which was held in Hannover, Germany, on April 17-21. During the annual trade fair, Indonesia succeeded in attracting investment and registering transactions totaling Rp 37 trillion (US$2.5 billion), with a potential of between 50,000 and 80,000 jobs.
At least 30 collaboration agreements involving mostly businesses and investments were inked during Hannover Messe 2023 (HM23). In accepting the official partner status, however, Indonesia did not only pursue "on the spot" deals, but also the event's global reputation. As such Indonesia must go further and recognize its readiness to embrace various technological investments and join the global value chain (GVC).
Since 1947, the Hannover Fairground in Germany has hosted the world's largest technology show. Disruptive technologies have their origins in the largest city in Lower Saxony.
HM23 was especially important for Indonesia. It gave us the strength to win over the international community and the trust of global citizens, paving the way for us to join the GVC of strategic and technological sectors.
The raw materials and human capital are already abundant in Indonesia for the development of game-changing businesses like semiconductors and chips. In reality, however, joining the GVC network is easier said than done.
This is because not all countries grant the necessary permissions for technology to depart or be commercialized outside of the nation of manufacture. Chip manufacturing, for example, is done in the Netherlands, although the essential material components are produced in other nations.
The GVC then handles distribution, and because it is a closed system with a robust network, it is not easy to break into. Indonesia's inclusion in the network requires a sustained push, and HM23 provided just that. Therefore, planning is important in order to take advantage of the enormous potential behind it at an event on the scale of the Hannover Messe.
