n Oct. 16, the world will celebrate World Food Day, a commemoration of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) which was established in 1945. This year’s theme for World Food Day is water is life, water is food.

The theme brings to the fore the importance of water as the foundation for life and food. But what does this commemoration mean for Indonesia?

As one of the prominent members of the FAO, Indonesia’s commitment to this commemoration and contribution to the cause is without question. That is why it is important to share Indonesia’s perspectives on this issue and experiences, especially on the three following aspects.

First, sustaining the food-water-energy nexus.

Increased demand for food, water and energy is inevitable. According to the FAO, feeding a global population that is expected to reach 9 billion people by 2050 will require a 60 percent increase in food production.

Furthermore, climate change affects the world’s water, leading to unpredictable water availability, exacerbating water scarcity and contaminating water supplies. Those problems have a significant impact on global food insecurity.
