outheast Asia must brace for new waves of political refugees and economic migrants from Myanmar due to the drawn-out crisis as the country witnesses the deepest deterioration of peace in the region, a global study has found.
According to the 2021 Global Peace Index (GPI), Myanmar ranks just above North Korea as the least peaceful country in the Asia-Pacific, as it faced internal conflicts on many fronts following the military coup on Feb. 1 that ousted the democratically elected government.
The index, published annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) nonprofit think tank based in Sydney, Australia, highlighted 2021 GPI warns of regional migrant crisis as peace 'deteriorates' in Myanmar also noted that while past conflicts had “begun to abate”, they had been “replaced with a new wave of tension and uncertainty as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising tensions between many of the major powers”.
This year’s GPI found that civil unrest grew more than 10 percent globally in 2020. Of the 14,871 violent demonstrations, protests and riots recorded last year, more than 5,000 were pandemic-related events that took place between January 2020 and April 2021.
The GPI ranks 163 countries for peacefulness based on 23 indicators under the three “domains” of safety and security, ongoing conflict and militarization.
Indonesia ranks “high” in its state of peace, moving up two spots in its global ranking from last year to 42nd this year, which it shares with Mongolia.
