NE Flyweight World Champion Adriano Moraes has a chance to further cement his dominance over the division at ONE Fight Night 1: Moraes vs. Johnson II on Saturday.
That morning, the longtime flyweight king takes on Demetrious Johnson for the second time at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, and he’ll be looking to score another win over the MMA icon after knocking him out in their first meeting in April 2021.
Ahead of the highly anticipated rematch, we break down three interesting facts about “Mikinho” that fans should know before they watch him in action this weekend.
#1 He has reclaimed the flyweight world title twice
Moraes has been in the highest echelon of ONE’s flyweight division for many years, and he has had a tumultuous relationship with the divisional gold.
He first became the World Champion in 2014 when he fought Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio into submission at ONE: Rise of the Kingdom to claim the crown. However, just over a year later, the Brazilian star lost to Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov, dropping the World Title in the process.
He won it back in his rematch with “The Kazakh” in August 2017, only to lose it again in his second meeting with Eustaquio in June 2018. The disappointment of that defeat was short-lived, however, as Moraes won their trilogy match in January 2019, and he has held the strap ever since.
#2 His journey began with three different martial arts
While Moraes is best known for his Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) skills, the lifelong martial artist was first introduced to combat sports through judo. “Mikinho” began training in the Japanese martial art at the age of 7 before moving on to capoeira, which is a combination of self-defense, acrobatics and dance.
Moraes started training in BJJ when he was 16 and earned his black belt 11 years later in 2015.
#3 He enjoys kicks and kickflips
The flyweight king likes to hit the tarmac when he’s not hitting the canvas. Moraes is a fan of skateboarding and still practices the extreme sport today.
He started skating around the same time he began training in martial arts and always makes sure he has time to get on his board. Most recently, the World Champion shared the asphalt (and later, the mats) with the famed grappling pair, the Ruotolo twins.
