Violent attacks committed by armed civilian criminal groups in Papua over the last 10 years have resulted in the deaths of 78 civilians, 57 National Police members and 62 Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel as well as hundreds of injuries, a report revealed on Tuesday.
First. Brig. Berry Pramana Putra, a member of the National Police’s Mobile Brigade stationed in Timika, Papua was killed in an exchange of fire with unidentified gunmen on Utikini bridge, Tembagapura, Mimika regency on Sunday.
Bitter rivalry during this year’s simultaneous elections, including in Papua, have forced the Papua Police to partner with the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the Inter-Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB) to campaign for peaceful elections ahead of the Papua gubernatorial election in 2018.
