View all search resultsThe original version of the Constitution mandated the MPR to elect the president and vice president and to draft the State Policy Guidelines (GBHN), which if passed through the amendment plan, will effectively eliminate direct presidential and regional elections.
The public was shocked when a number of controversial bills were about to be passed, though delayed. But what was not realized all around was the fact that all the bills had been approved in their entirety by virtually all political parties, without any meaningful debate or contention among themselves.
We knew from history how the GBHN was being devised; it had never been designed nor discussed in consultancy with regional governments, let alone people on the ground. The guidelines had always been the top-down product of the MPR; it was exclusively devised and imposed by the elites.
