View all search resultsThe United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has detected traces of radioactive contamination in cloves imported from Indonesia, marking the second such discovery in Indonesian food products shipped to the US in less than two months.
The synthetic substances - which have a chemical structure similar to that of nicotine - are not subject to US tobacco and vaping regulations that are designed to control traditional nicotine, a highly addictive drug.
The Food and Drug Administration has reprimanded at least 28 companies this year, saying they failed to prove sufficient testing of ingredients used in over-the-counter drugs and consumer products for the toxins ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG), according to a Reuters analysis of agency import alerts and warning letters to manufacturers.
In a statement, the FDA said it had no indication that contaminated syrups had entered the US drug supply chain, but it is "investigating the potential impact and scope of this hazard on FDA-regulated products." The agency recommended consumers only take medicines which were made to be sold in the United States, especially for children.
