ndonesia has halted production at seafood processor PT Bahari Makmur Sejati, which operates as BMS Foods, pending a product safety probe, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said on Friday.
The investigation comes after United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) found that raw frozen shrimp imported from the company may have contained radioactive material.
The government has ordered a full environmental audit of the company’s facility in Serang, Banten, and instructed workers to vacate the premises as a precaution.
“Production activities are suspended temporarily. If possible, the factory should be emptied for safety reasons,” Hanif said in a video post on Instagram.

The minister visited the production plant on Thursday after the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten) reported the presence of Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, but emphasized that further testing was required to determine whether the factory was the source.
Bapeten detected the material in the facility’s exhaust vent, Kumparan reported.
