T

he government is gearing up to defend local shrimp producers against dumping accusations by the United States, as it seeks to prevent foreign trade measures that could disrupt exports.

The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has prepared several arguments to counter the US accusations.

“We will fight together to have [all the] accusations dropped. In the worst case, we hope to lower the dumping duty [imposed on Indonesian exports],” said Budi Sulistiyo, the ministry’s director general of fishery product competitiveness during a press briefing on Monday.

In October last year, the American Shrimp Processors Association filed a petition with the US Department of Commerce (USDOC) and the US International Trade Commission (USITC), accusing shrimp exporters from various countries, including Indonesia, of dumping.

The association also accused the governments of those countries of providing subsidies to lower the costs for local producers to ship their goods abroad.

Earlier this year, the USDOC released a preliminary position stating that there is no evidence of the Indonesian government providing significant subsidies.

The department also pointed out that there was no difference between the export price from an Indonesian exporter called PT Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS) and the market value, referred to as the dumping margin, but found a 6.3 percent margin for PT First Marine Seafood (FMS). As a result, it decided to apply the highest duty on all Indonesian shrimp exporters.
