The latest incident, which injured two workers, shows that the company has not done enough to improve the safety and security of the nickel processing plant in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, a union has claimed.
The occupational safety and health (OSH) standard at the nickel-focused Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) is under scrutiny after explosions blasted in Tsinghan subsidiary Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel’s (ITSS) nickel furnace located in the industrial park. The deadly incident adds to the series of OSH incidents in the industrial park, raising concerns over its OSH regulation implementation.
The incident happened on Monday at the Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI) plant in Morowali, local police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Djoko Wienartono confirmed. The smelter, launched in 2021, is owned by China's Jiangsu Delong Nickel Industry and has an annual capacity of 1.8 million tonnes.
The workers at PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) in Central Sulawesi province said they "endured a lot of physical, psychological, financial damages to their reputation as human beings", according to a statement from the law firm.
